Background of the study
Religious institutions have historically been involved in the rehabilitation of offenders, offering moral guidance, counseling, and support for reintegration into society. In Etsako East, these institutions play a vital role in prison rehabilitation by implementing faith-based programs aimed at transforming inmates’ lives through spiritual reformation. Such programs often include counseling, mentorship, and vocational training integrated with religious teachings. Studies indicate that faith-based rehabilitation can lead to reduced recidivism and improved mental health among inmates (Uwadiae, 2023). Moreover, religious counseling has been associated with better social adjustment post-release (Ewere, 2024). In the face of modern correctional challenges, the evolving role of religious institutions in prison rehabilitation warrants thorough investigation to evaluate their effectiveness and identify potential improvements (Olowo, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite evidence supporting the benefits of religious rehabilitation programs, the specific impact of religious institutions on prison rehabilitation in Etsako East remains inadequately studied. Limited data exist on how religious interventions influence recidivism, inmate behavior, and post-release integration. Inconsistent implementation and a lack of standardized protocols further complicate the assessment of these programs. This gap in research hinders the development of comprehensive rehabilitation strategies that effectively integrate religious support with conventional correctional methods. The study aims to address this gap by examining the contributions of religious institutions to prison rehabilitation and identifying associated challenges.
